Lewis Capaldi has snapped back at angry trolls who blamed him for ‘promoting an unhealthy relationship with alcohol’ during a boozy appearance at the BRIT Awards 2020.
The 23-year-old Glaswegian, who took home two BRIT Awards during the coveted show on Tuesday, took to social media to respond to criticisms of his on-stage drinking.
“We have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol in Scotland. This doesn’t help,” a Scottish activist wrote on Twitter, who repeated her statement twice more alongside a picture of Lewis holding a bottle of Buckfast and his winning BRIT award.
“Imagine having a drink on my first night off in moths after winning two Brit awards, can you believe it?! [sic]” the Someone You Love hitmaker wrote in response to the criticism.
Capaldi took home the awards for Best Song and Best New Artist during the ceremony, and proudly went on stage for a hilarious acceptance speech where he refers to his ex-girlfriend and current Love Islander Paige and even his late grandmother.
During the occasionally sweary speech, the musician also gripped onto his bottle of Buckfast.
The alcoholic tonic wine drink has, in the past, been notoriously connected to Scotland.
Fans of the award winning singer have leapt to his defence in the face of tense online exchange.
“Imagine blaming yourself drinking alcohol on Lewis Capaldi, a man majority of us will never meet on a miniscule segment on a TV you can turn off yourself,” wrote one.
“Imagine someone slating a 23 year old for having a drink at an event where EVERYONE was drinking. Lizzo downed a glass of neat tequila ffs,” wrote another.
Lewis’ cheery appearance during last night’s awards show followed not long after he struggled with a terrible hangover during the Grammy Awards earlier this year.
He confessed that he was forced to give up alcohol for a month because he had drowned his sorrows after losing out to global icon Billie Eilish for Song of the Year at the annual awards ceremony in LA and got “pretty drunk.”
He had already admitted that he would make an exception to his drinking ban for last night’s event, admitting recently “”I’m off the booze for a month now – apart from the Brits.”
Later this year, Lewis will be heading on tour alongside pal Niall Horan as the supporting act during the One Direction star’s international tour.
